HE application figures show that while overall undergraduate numbers are up, the number of students studying for part time degrees has plummeted since the 2012 rise in tuition fees. The Independent reports that, according to an investigation by The Sunday Times Good University Guide, the number of graduates leaving university with the top two honours degree grades has risen by over 80 per cent and is ‘spiralling out of control’. The Minister of State for Universities and Science has voiced concerns that the increase in 2:1 classifications are allowing students to ‘coast’ through.
